Maruti Suzuki Jimny Five-Door Hits 50,000 Bookings in Japan, Orders Paused

3 Min Read

The made-in-India Maruti Suzuki Jimny, rebranded as the Jimny Nomad in Japan, has taken the Japanese market by storm. Within just four days of its launch, Suzuki Motor Corporation has been forced to pause bookings after receiving an overwhelming 50,000 orders.

Suzuki Halts Bookings Due to Overwhelming Demand

Suzuki had initially planned for a modest sales figure of 1,200 units per month in Japan. However, with the current booking rate, the waiting period has now extended to nearly three-and-a-half years. To prevent further delays, Suzuki has temporarily halted bookings while assuring customers that efforts are being made to expedite deliveries.

Official Statement from Suzuki

A Suzuki spokesperson stated, “We will make company-wide efforts to resume orders as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize to customers who were considering or placing orders for the vehicle. Due to this suspension, advance exhibitions and shopping mall events featuring the Jimny Nomad will also be canceled.”

India-Made Suzuki Jimny: A Global Success Story

Despite slow domestic sales in India, the Jimny five-door has gained immense popularity in global markets. Manufactured exclusively at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Haryana, India, the Jimny is exported to nearly 100 countries. It has now become the second-highest exported model for the company in FY 2024-25, following the success of the Baleno and Fronx.

Jimny Nomad: Pricing and Specifications

In Japan, the five-door Jimny is sold as the Jimny Nomad, while the three-door version continues as the Jimny Sierra. Priced at JPY 2.65 million (approximately Rs 14.88 lakh), the Jimny Nomad features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 101 bhp and 130 Nm of torque. It is available with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

A Struggling Market in India, A Thriving One Abroad

While the Jimny five-door has struggled to find a strong foothold in the Indian market—leading to heavy discounts—it has experienced outstanding demand internationally. With its off-road capability, compact design, and strong brand legacy, the Jimny continues to be a sought-after vehicle worldwide.
