6 Min Read

Mahindra has recently unveiled the 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx, which comes in six distinct variants. This article will focus on the AX5L variant, which is an excellent choice for buyers looking for a balanced package without exceeding their budget for the top-spec model. Using 20 real-life images, we’ll delve into what the AX5L variant offers and its appearance in real life.

Bookings for the Thar Roxx are set to open on October 3, with deliveries starting from Dussehra on October 12.

Thar Roxx AX5L: Exterior

The Thar Roxx showcases a redesigned 6-slat grille with body-color finishing and larger, aggressively styled bumpers featuring contrasting silver accents.

In the AX5L variant, you’ll find modern C-shaped LED DRLs, LED projector headlamps, and LED fog lights, which are standard across the range.

While it lacks the larger 19-inch alloy wheels found in higher trims, the AX5L sports unique 18-inch alloys.

As with other variants, the Thar Roxx features badging on the front fender and the Thar logo on the ORVMs, plus a side footstep for easier entry and exit.

At the rear, it boasts C-shaped LED tail lights, a rear wiper and washer, and a robust bumper equipped with a rugged silver skid plate, emphasizing its off-road character.

However, unlike the top-spec variant, this model has a covered 18-inch spare wheel mounted on the tailgate instead of the exposed 19-inch option, which some may find less appealing.

Thar Roxx AX5L: Interior and Features

The Thar Roxx is known not just for its rugged exterior but also for its premium interior. Despite being a mid-range variant, the AX5L includes a range of upscale features to meet buyer needs, though it lacks the soft-touch materials found in the top-spec version.

The center console mirrors the higher-end models with a floating touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. Observant viewers will spot more dummy switches in the control stack, indicating missing features.

The lower central console includes the gear lever and storage spaces, but the display model shows the downside of white upholstery, which can easily get soiled.

Unlike the top-spec variant, the AX5L forgoes Harman Kardon speakers in the doors, resulting in larger front door pockets.

While it doesn’t feature a panoramic sunroof, which is exclusive to the AX7L variant, it does include a single-pane sunroof, which we appreciate.

Rear passengers enjoy a spacious bench that accommodates three people, along with reclining seats, a center armrest, and rear AC vents for added comfort.

Other onboard features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, a wireless phone charger, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, cruise control, steering-mounted audio controls, automatic climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, and electrically adjustable ORVMs.

Safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), ISOFIX child seat mounts, front and rear parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, 3-point seat belts for all passengers, and hill hold and descent control, along with ADAS features.

However, it does miss out on some premium amenities such as ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, a panoramic sunroof, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a 360-degree camera. Would you be willing to pay more for these upgrades? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Thar Roxx AX5L: Powertrain

The Roxx AX5L is available exclusively with a 2.2-liter diesel engine and does not offer the 2-liter turbo-petrol engine. The diesel engine can be paired with either RWD or 4WD options, generating 152 PS and 330 Nm with RWD, or 175 PS and 370 Nm with 4WD when combined with the automatic transmission. The diesel engine is only available with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

It features the CrawlSmart function (available in Diesel 4WD only) and the Intelliturn function (also Diesel 4WD only) for enhanced off-road capabilities.

Thar Roxx AX5L: Price and Rivals

The introductory price for the Thar Roxx AX5L variant is Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while the pricing for the 4WD variant is yet to be announced. The RWD variant’s price starts at Rs 12.99 lakh, reaching up to Rs 20.49 lakh. The extended Thar competes with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha 5-door, as well as being a viable off-road alternative to compact SUVs like the VW Taigun, Honda Elevate, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Mahindra Thar Roxx AX5L variant strikes an impressive balance between rugged capability and premium features, making it an ideal choice for buyers seeking an adventurous vehicle without stretching their budget to the top-spec models. With its striking exterior, comfortable interior, and a host of modern amenities, the AX5L is designed to cater to both off-road enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. As bookings open on October 3 and deliveries begin shortly after, this variant presents an exciting opportunity for those looking to embrace the thrill of the Thar experience. Whether you’re navigating city streets or tackling challenging terrains, the Thar Roxx AX5L is poised to deliver a remarkable driving experience.
