Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car manufacturer, has officially commenced production at its latest manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy to boost its production capacity in India.
Initial Capacity and Future Expansion Plans
The Kharkhoda facility is Maruti Suzuki’s fourth manufacturing unit in the country and will initially produce 2.5 lakh vehicles per annum. Over time, the production capacity is set to increase to 1 million units annually. This expansion aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s vision of achieving an overall production capacity of 4 million units annually by 2030-31.
Maruti Suzuki: Manufacturing Network
With the addition of the Kharkhoda plant, Maruti Suzuki now operates four manufacturing facilities across India:
- Gurgaon, Haryana
- Manesar, Haryana
- Hansalpur, Gujarat
- Kharkhoda, Haryana (newest addition)
Additionally, the company has announced a Rs 35,000 crore investment to set up another manufacturing facility in Gujarat with a planned annual capacity of 1 million units. However, reports suggest that the finalization of the land parcel for this new plant is still pending.
Record-Breaking Milestone of Maruti Suzuki
In December 2024, Maruti Suzuki achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first car manufacturer in India to produce 2 million vehicles in a single calendar year. Out of this, 60% of the production took place in Haryana, while the remaining 40% came from Gujarat. This milestone further cements Maruti Suzuki’s dominance in the Indian automotive industry.
Conclusion
Maruti Suzuki’s latest expansion move at Kharkhoda is a testament to its commitment to strengthening production capabilities and maintaining market leadership. With plans to scale up capacity and new investments in Gujarat, the company is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for automobiles in India and beyond. As Maruti Suzuki continues to set new benchmarks, its role in shaping the future of the Indian automotive industry remains significant.
