Having started small just a few years ago, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD is now ramping up its sales efforts in India. Next month, the company will unveil the facelifted version of its popular MPV, the eMax 7, as demand for its current models, the Atto 3 SUV and Seal sedan, continues to thrive. In addition to these, BYD is eyeing further market expansion with plans to introduce a second SUV by 2025, likely debuting at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo on January 17, 2025.
BYD’s Upcoming SUV Plans for India
Speaking with carandbike, Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles (EPV) Business at BYD India, shared that the company is actively considering entering the Rs 20-50 lakh SUV segment. While BYD is currently focused on the eMax 7’s launch, it’s clear an SUV will be next on the horizon. Chauhan expects to finalize details in time for the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in 2025, where the new SUV is likely to be unveiled.

Strengthening BYD’s Electric Vehicle Identity
Currently, BYD’s India portfolio includes the Atto 3 SUV, which is priced between Rs 24.99 lakh and Rs 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom). One of the potential candidates for the Indian market is the BYD Seal U, known as the Song Plus EV in China. This SUV is significantly larger than the Atto 3, featuring a more powerful battery and an extended range. Available internationally with 71.8 kWh and 87 kWh battery options, the Seal U offers a range exceeding 500 km (WLTP), making it a strong contender against competitors like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson.
Bigger Presence at Bharat Mobility Global Expo
BYD is preparing for a significant presence at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Global Expo, where it plans to showcase its portfolio in a much larger format than at the 2023 Auto Expo. Regarding the company’s potential for hybrid models, Chauhan mentioned that while they are closely monitoring the demand for hybrids, BYD remains committed to its pure-electric strategy in the immediate future.

BYD eMax 7 Targets Indian Market
The eMax 7, much like the Atto 3 and Seal, will be imported fully into India. The eMax 7 is set to replace the five-seat e6 MPV, which sold 1,250 units in 2023, predominantly to fleet operators. However, with added features like a sunroof, BYD hopes the eMax 7 will appeal to a broader range of buyers, including those seeking a vehicle for personal use. Set to launch on October 8, the eMax 7 is expected to be priced between Rs 25 lakh and 30 lakh (ex-showroom).
