Renault has officially teased the name of its upcoming seven-seat SUV – Boreal. Expected to debut in Brazil in the coming months, this model will later make its way to India, with a market launch anticipated in FY2026. The name ‘Boreal’ has already been trademarked in India, hinting that the international moniker may be retained here as well.
What Does ‘Boreal’ Mean? A Name with Northern Inspiration
According to Sylvia Dos Santos, Renault’s head of appellations strategy, the name Boreal is derived from the Greek word ‘Boreas’, referring to the northern wind and also the Greek god of winter. The inspiration also draws from the Aurora Borealis—the mystical Northern Lights—which aligns with Renault’s theme of natural elements and global appeal.

Overseas Identity: Known as Dacia Bigster
While the car will be sold as the Dacia Bigster in Europe, Renault is rebranding the model for markets outside Europe—including Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The Boreal will be offered in over 70 international markets, furthering Renault’s global SUV strategy.
Design and Platform: A Bigger, Bolder Duster
Built on the CMF-B platform, the Boreal is essentially a stretched version of the new-gen Duster. It will feature three rows of seating, enhanced cabin space, and a modern design language that’s bolder and more premium than the Duster it is based on.
India Launch Timeline: FY2026
Renault India has confirmed that the Boreal will arrive on Indian shores sometime in FY2026. This will likely follow the launch of the new-generation Duster, marking the brand’s renewed focus on the mid-size and large SUV segments in India.
What to Expect from Boreal
While specs are still under wraps, the Boreal is expected to feature petrol and hybrid powertrain options, premium interiors, advanced safety features, and a tech-forward cabin. Positioned above the Duster, it will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus.
Conclusion: Renault’s Big SUV Bet
With the Boreal, Renault is not only expanding its global SUV lineup but also aiming to recapture the Indian SUV market where the Duster once reigned. It brings modern appeal with a nostalgic badge revival, making 2026 an exciting year for SUV lovers in India.
